NOAA's New England Bay Watershed Education and Training Program (B-WET)

Teens using net to scoop up seagrass on a Save the Bay projectB-WET is an environmental education program that promotes locally relevant, experiential learning for K-12 school students. B-WET administers a competitive funding process that promotes Meaningful Watershed Educational Experiences (MWEEs). MWEEs are multi-stage activities within formal k-12 programs that include learning both outdoors and in the classroom. They aim to increase the environmental literacy of all participants. Teachers should become comfortable conducting MWEEs, during which they support student investigation of topics both locally and globally that are of interest to the students. Students will learn they have control over the outcome of environmental issues, identify actions available to address these issues, and understand the value of those actions.

New England B-WET focuses on the priorities and challenges facing New England watersheds by helping students and teachers apply scientific methods and tools to understand and appreciate their local watershed system.  B-WET students become more interested in science, technology, engineering and math. By focusing on watersheds where they live and participating in personally relevant stewardship projects, students and teachers can become knowledgeable stewards of their local environment.

New England B-WET funds projects in Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. To be eligible, applicants must work with an audience in the targeted geography, but do not need to be from one of these states. K-12 public and independent schools and school systems, institutions of higher education, community-based and nonprofit organizations, state or local government agencies, interstate agencies, and Indian tribal governments may apply.

The New England B-WET 2016 Federal Funding Opportunity for FY 2017 Funds closed October 28, 2016.
