2016 Management Measures for Atlantic Sea Scallop Fishery

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
May 3, 2016

Today, NOAA Fisheries announces the final rule to set management measures for the Atlantic Sea Scallop fishery for the 2016 fishing year.

The rule, called Framework 27:

  • Sets annual catch limits for both the Limited Access and Limited Access General Category fleets, days-at-sea and allocations for the sea scallop access area,
  • Creates a new rotational closed area south of Closed Area II to protect small scallops,
  • Opens the northern portion of the Nantucket Lightship Access Area to the Limited Access General Category fleet and 485 Limited Access General Category access area trips from the Mid-Atlantic Access Area to this area, and
  • Reduces the 2016 Northern Gulf of Maine Total Allowable Catch to 67,454 lbs to account for overharvesting in 2015.

Read the final rule (pdf) as filed in the Federal Register and the fishery bulletins (pdf) for the Limited Access fleet, and the Limited Access General Category fleet.
