NOAA Fisheries Announces Reduced Trip Limit for Atlantic Herring Area 1B

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
November 15, 2016

NOAA Fisheries announces a reduced trip limit of 2,000 pounds for Atlantic herring in Management Area 1B effective November 18 through the end of the fishing year.

Under the Atlantic herring fishery management plan, when herring catch reaches 92 percent of the Management Area 1B sub-ACL before the end of the fishing year, vessels are prohibited from landing more than 2,000 pounds of herring per trip and more than once per calendar day from Area 1B until the start of the next fishing year.

We have projected that 92 percent of the Area 1B annual catch limit has been harvested. The 2,000-lb possession limit restriction is effective from November 18 through December 31.

From January 1 through April 30, there is no Area 1B allocation available, and no vessel may fish for herring in Area 1B under current regulations. The 2017 Area 1B annual catch limit will be available beginning May 1, 2017.

For more information, read the rule as filed today in the Federal Register, and the permit holder bulletin.
