NOAA Fisheries Announces Herring Possession Reduction for Midwater Trawl Vessels in Mid-Atlantic/Southern New England Catch Cap Closure Area

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
March 12, 2018

Under the Atlantic Herring Fishery Management Plan, once 95 percent of the midwater trawl river herring and shad catch cap in the Mid-Atlantic/Southern New England Catch Cap Area is projected to be harvested, midwater trawl vessels are prohibited from fishing for or landing more than 2,000 lb of herring per trip or per calendar day in or from the Mid-Atlantic/Southern New England Catch Cap Closure Area for the remainder of the fishing year.

We have projected that the catch cap for this area has been reached.

The 2,000-lb herring possession limit goes into effect for midwater trawl vessels in the Mid-Atlantic/Southern New England Catch Cap Closure Area (see map) on March 14, 2018.

The possession limit is through the end of the 2018 fishing year, December 31, 2018.

Only vessels holding Federal herring permits and fishing with midwater trawl gear in the Mid-Atlantic/Southern New England Catch Cap Closure Area are affected by this possession limit.

For more information, read the rule as filed today in the Federal Register, and the permit holder bulletin on our website.
