NOAA Fisheries Seeks Comments on Proposed Rule: Approval of New Gear Under Small-Mesh Fisheries Accountability Measures

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
November 15, 2018

We are seeking public comment on an action that would approve a new selective trawl gear, the large-mesh belly panel, including the configuration of the net, for small-mesh commercial groundfish vessels when subject to the Georges Bank yellowtail flounder accountability measure.

Currently approved for use in these areas are the haddock separator trawl, Ruhle trawl, and rope separator trawl.

The proposed gear significantly reduces flatfish bycatch and would provide additional flexibility for trawl vessels in the accountability measure areas.

Read the proposed rule as published in the Federal Register, and submit your comments through the online portal. You may also submit comments through regular mail to:

Michael Pentony, Regional Administrator

The comment period is open through December 17, 2018.
