Status of the Stocks Report for 2018

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
August 2, 2019

Today, we release the 2018 Status of Stocks report, an important annual document highlighting the continued rebuilding and recovery of U.S. fisheries. Our analysis shows positive progress in rebuilding our nation’s fish stocks. The number of stocks on the overfishing list remains near all-time lows, though the number of stocks on the overfished list increased, due to a number of factors including those outside the control of domestic fisheries management. In 2018, 91 percent of stocks were not subject to overfishing and 82 percent of stocks were not overfished.

In our region, two important changes occurred in our fisheries:

1. One previously overfished stock, Smooth skate, was rebuilt in the Gulf of Maine. This brings the total stocks rebuilt since 2000 to 45.

2. In July 2018, Atlantic mackerel was deemed overfished and fishery managers were given two years to implement a rebuilding plan. The good news is that they are ahead of schedule and a 5-year rebuilding plan is expected to be in place by August 2019.

This report highlights the success that can be achieved using sound science, innovative management approaches, effective enforcement, meaningful partnerships, and robust public participation.
