2022 Atlantic Large Whale Entanglement Report

Abstract

This report summarizes all of the entanglement incidents for the Atlantic coast that were reported to the National Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA Fisheries) in 2022 in which line, gear or other unknown materials was directly observed on the whale.  Only incidents with new indications of entanglement that occurred in the calendar year of 2022 are included.  Earlier large whale entanglements that continued into 2022 are not listed. This report is not a comprehensive list of every entanglement interaction that occurred but rather a minimum number, as not all interactions are reported.
