The New England Fishery Management Council has been developing an Omnibus Essential Fish Habitat Amendment for several years.  On Friday, October 10, 2014, the notice of availability of the Draft Environmental Impact Statement published.  There will be a 90-day public comment period, ending January 8, 2015

The Habitat Amendment is intended to:  (1) Revise the essential fish habitat designations for each Council-managed species, (2) designate Habitat Areas of Particular Concern, (3) establish Dedicated Habitat Research Areas to facilitate further study of fishing gear impacts on habitat, and (4) revise the year-round closed areas for the purposes of minimizing the adverse effects of fishing throughout the Gulf of Maine, on Georges Bank, and into the Great South Channel.
