Automated Fisheries Information Phone Service

Date: February 4, 1997

Dear Permit Holder:

The National Marine Fisheries Service's Northeast Regional Office (NMFS) is pleased to announce the implementation of our new automated fisheries information phone service. By following the voice prompt and pressing the corresponding number on your telephone key pad, callers will automatically be connected to the appropriate NMFS staff member during normal business hours. After business hour callers may leave a voice mail message requesting a return call, regulatory information or permit applications.

The Fisheries Information Phone Line is divided into four categories designed to streamline your call to the appropriate staff member in your area of need. The categories consist of Atlantic tunas information, permit information, Multispecies/Amendment 7 information, and experimental fisheries and other federal fishery regulatory information. Each category provides the caller the opportunity to either speak to a live person during normal business hours or leave a message for a staff member to return your call during the next business day.

A series of NMFS Northeast Region Information Sheets has been created to provide you with quick reference information on new permitting requirements, important regulatory information regarding the Northeast Multispecies fishery and weekly summer flounder and scup quota reports. To receive any of the Information sheets by mail, follow the prompts in the appropriate categories. Callers with fax capability may request NMFS Northeast Region Informational Sheets by following the voice prompt and entering their fax number when requested. For more detailed regulatory information, callers are encouraged to request a copy of the current regulations published in the Federal Register.

NMFS has also implemented new information lines for tuna quota and permit information, and a law enforcement "drop a dime" number to report fisheries related law infractions. The numbers for these lines are attached. NMFS's automated informational telephone system has been established for your convenience. Please retain the attached for future reference.
