Summer Flounder Recreational Fishery Notice

Date: July 8, 1997

Dear Summer Flounder Charter/Party Permit Holder:

This letter is to inform you that the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) has recently issued final specifications for the 1997 summer flounder recreational fishery. For 1997, the personal possession limit of summer flounder is increased from 8 to 10 fish. The minimum fish size of 14 inches (35.6 cm) has likewise been increased to 14.5 inches (36.8 cm), and the lack of a closed season remains for 1997. Pursuant to 648.100 of the regulations, measures have been implemented for 1997 to achieve the coastwide recreational harvest limit of 7.41 million pounds (3.4 million kg), and to ensure that the target fishing mortality rate is not exceeded.

NMFS announces the following measures for the recreational fishery, which are effective July 8, 1997, and are unchanged from the proposed measures published in the Federal Register on April 8, 1997.

(1) Closed Season - None

(2) Individual Possession Limit - 10 fish per person, and

(3) Minimum Fish Size - 14.5 inches (36.8 cm)

I hope this clarifies the regulations for you. If you have any questions, please call 508-281-9221.
