***NOTICE***

To all Scallop Vessel Owners Not Intending to Fish for Atlantic Sea Scallops During Fishing Year 1998-1999

Date: April 9, 1998

Your vessel may be temporarily exempt from the requirement to install a certified Boatracs Vessel Tracking System (VTS) for the 1998-1999 fishing year.

On March 10, 1998, you were informed that the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) has certified Boatracs, Inc. as a VTS vendor for the Atlantic sea scallop fishery and that all limited access permit holders in the full-time and part-time categories are required to have an operational VTS unit on board effective May 15, 1998.

The Regional Administrator is providing a temporary exemption from the requirement to install a VTS to vessels that will not fish for Atlantic sea scallops during the 1998-1999 fishing year. To be eligible for this exemption you must declare your vessel out of the scallop fishery for the 1998-1999 fishing year by calling 978-281-9230. The temporary exemption is available one-time only to vessels declared out of the scallop fishery for the 1998-1999 fishing year, and may not be renewed.

Once you have received this exemption, you may not fish for scallops during the 1998-1999 fishing year. Unless otherwise notified, you will be required to install a VTS to be eligible to renew your scallop permit for the 1999-2000 fishing year.

This notice is authorized by the Administrator of the National Marine Fisheries Service, Northeast Region
