Dear Fishery Participant:
The National Marine Fisheries Service needs to increase its staff of sea sampling observers to cover the sea scallop fishery in Closed Area II which may open as early as June 15.
We are looking for people to work as full-time observers in this fishery from mid-June until perhaps the end of August, with some potential for additional opportunity for employment through December. We cannot guarantee the timing or amount of work, which depends on how the fishery operates. Participants could become candidates for our permanent ongoing sea sampling program, depending on qualifications, performance, and additional training.
We will train successful applicants in a 5-day course at Manomet Observatory, Manomet, MA, and will pay $1,000 to cover travel expenses and salary during training. Courses will begin in May. If you successfully complete the course, we will deploy you as a sea sampler in the sea scallop fishery. The salary is $200 per sea day, pretax. No other benefits are available.
Please pass this application on to anyone else in the industry you believe may be interested. Depending on the number of applicants, preference may be given to participants in the Gulf of Maine groundfish industry.
All applicants must be high school graduates, have at least 2 years of sea-going experience, and be able to read, write, and speak English to collect scientific data. To apply, please contact Mr. Harold Foster, Northeast Fisheries Science Center, 166 Water Street, Woods Hole, MA 02540. You may fax, mail, or e-mail the information requested on the attached sheet (fax and phone numbers, and an e-mail address, are provided in the attached application).
