Socioeconomic Impacts of Atlantic Offshore Wind Development

Utility: The data available in the query tool below can be used to help identify the major species harvested, affected fishery operations, potential revenue impacted, and ports/states affected by offshore wind development in each lease area or approved project area, including a combination of multiple areas. The data supporting the query tool are the same as the data used in individual lease/project summary reports.

If you need project or area-specific data or a combination of data fields that is not included below, please submit a detailed data request to nmfs.gar.data.requests@noaa.gov at least one month before you need such data.

Data and Methods: This page includes modeled Greater Atlantic Regional Fisheries Office vessel logbook and dealer report data as of November 15, 2022, overlaid upon current offshore wind lease areas and project areas approved to date using lease/project area shapefiles available on BOEM’s GIS website as of August 19, 2022. This page and underlying data will be updated annually in June.

Landings and value were summarized according to:

  1. Species

  2. Gear type

  3. Port of landing

  4. State of landing

In order to meet requirements of maintaining data confidentiality, these strata are presented individually. In addition, the values for records that did not meet the rule of three (>=3 unique dealers and >= 3 unique permits), values were summarized as ‘ALL OTHERS’.

Data Caveats/notes:

Values are reported in nominal dollars. Values in 2020 dollars are reported as well (see below for details). Pounds are reported in landed (dressed) pounds. Data summarized here is based on vessels that are required to provide federal VTRs. Federal lobster vessels, with only lobster permits, do not have a VTR requirement. Many Atlantic Highly Migratory Species permitted vessels also do not have a VTR requirement. Trips with no VTR are not reflected in this summary. There exist other fisheries in State waters that may not be reflected in data from federal sources (e.g. whelk, bluefish). It is recommended to query state agencies for additional data within state waters. All summaries presented here are built from percentages of a trip that overlapped spatially with the offshore wind lease areas. These percentages were applied to landings and values for that trip and summed. This differs from simply using the self-reported VTR/clam logbook locations as those place all value from that trip at a single point. Use of the VTR raster model is more representative as smoothing reported locations reduces the effect of location inaccuracy.

Data Table Notes

  • GDP % represents the conversion from nominal value to a standard value (e.g. 2020 dollars).

\[Value_{nominal}/GDP_{2020} = Value_{2020}\]

  • After downloading data be sure to check precision of columns. For example, you may wish to increase the precision for the % columns and round the revenue columns to whole dollars.

  • Columns showing % are relevant to the strata being presented. For example, Fishery Nominal Value (%) represents the proportion of the particular species caught within the WEA in that year compared to the total landings of that species for that year.

These data are the best available to NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) when this page was compiled. Data for this page are supplied to NMFS from vessels via the Vessel Trip Reports and Seafood Dealer reporting. Discrepancies with previous reports are due to corrections made to the database.
