NOAA Fisheries Announces Reduced Trip Possession Limits for Skate Wings and Bait Fisheries

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
January 24, 2017

NOAA Fisheries has reduced the commercial per-trip possession limits for the skate wing and skate bait fisheries through April 30, 2017, the end of the 2016 fishing year.

New per trip possession limits effective January 30

  • Skate wings: 500 pounds (1,135 pounds whole weight)
  • Skate bait: 1,135 pounds (whole weight)

We reduce the commercial possession limit for the skate wing and skate bait fisheries when landings are projected to reach 85 and 90 percent, respectively, of their annual total allowable landings (TAL). With this reduction, we expect the fisheries to reach their total allowable landings for 2016.

Per trip possession limits will increase on May 1, 2017.

Please note that barndoor, thorny, and smooth skates are still prohibited species.

For more information, read the rule as filed today in the Federal Register and the permit holder bulletin on our website.
