Management Measures Set for Scallop Fishery

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
April 18, 2018

NOAA Fisheries announces the rule to set management measures for the Atlantic Sea Scallop fishery for the remainder 2018 fishing year (April 19, 2018 – March 31, 2019). Framework 29:

Sets annual catch limits for both the limited access and limited access general category fleets, days-at-sea, and allocations for the sea scallop access areas. The 2018 projected landings are expected to increase by 28 percent from fishing year 2017.

Allocates effort into four rotational access areas (Mid-Atlantic, Nantucket Lightship-West, Nantucket Lightship-South, and Closed Area I). The Closed Area 1 and Nantucket Lightship-West contain new areas that became available to scallop fishing through the Omnibus Habitat Amendment; and

Adjusts the scallop fleet’s accountability measures for two different flatfish stocks (Southern New England/Mid-Atlantic yellowtail flounder and Georges Bank yellowtail flounder) and develops an accountability measure for northern windowpane flounder.

Read the final rule as published in the Federal Register, and the Limited Access and Limited Access General Category permit holder bulletins available on our website.
