Reminder: Federal Summer Flounder, Scup, and Black Sea Bass Recreational Rules for the Start of the 2019 Fishing Year

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
December 20, 2018

As of January 1, 2019, the following Federal recreational measures will be in place:

Species Season Min. Size (in) Possession Limit
Summer Flounder May 15-Sep 15 19 4
Scup Year-round 9 50
Black Sea Bass Feb 1-28, May 15-Dec 31 12.5 15

During the early part of 2019, we will work with the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission and the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council to determine if we are able to waive the summer flounder federal recreational measures, a process called “conservation equivalency.”

This annual process will be finalized later this spring, at which point we will send out another bulletin announcing any adjustments to the federal summer flounder recreational measures.

The Commission and Council recently recommended maintaining the current scup and black sea bass recreational measures for 2019, so long as the states implement measures designed to restrain catch to the recreational harvest limits for those species. Should any adjustments be necessary to federal measures, we will announce changes in a future bulletin later this spring.

Please keep in mind that if the federal minimum size, possession limit, and/or season differ from the regulations for the state in which you will be landing, you must follow the more restrictive regulations.
