Atlantic Herring Fishery; Adjustment to the Area 1A Sub-Annual Catch Limit; New Brunswick Weir Fishery Allocation Adjustment

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
December 28, 2016

Effective Date:  December 29, 2016 through December 31, 2016

New Brunswick weir fishery landings through October 1, 2016, were under 4,000 mt, so we have adjusted the 2016 fishing year Area 1A sub-annual herring catch limit (ACL) by adding 1,000 mt.

On December 29, 2016, we will increase the Area 1A sub-ACL from 29,524 mt to 30,524 mt, and we will increase the stock-wide ACL from 106,360 mt to 107,360 mt.

Note:  This 1000 mt allocation is not large enough to reopen the fishery, and thus will have no direct impact on fishing this year.  Adding the 1,000 mt will ensure that the 2018 adjustment for the Area 1A sub-ACL (which is based on 2016 catch) will be accurate.

Please check the herring quota monitoring website for more information on the status of the herring ACLs
