Period 2 Spiny Dogfish Closure

Date: October 27, 2000

Dear Spiny Dogfish Dealer and Commercial Vessel Permit Holder:

This letter is to inform you that the spiny dogfish commercial quota available to the coastal states from Maine to Florida for the fishing year 2000 period 2 (November-April) has been harvested.

Due to state management actions inconsistent with the Federal quota, the landings have already exceeded the annual quota for the entire 2000 fishing year. Therefore, effective November 1, 2000, fishing vessels issued a Federal permit for the spiny dogfish fishery may not land spiny dogfish for the duration of period 2 (November 1, 2000, through April 30, 2001). Vessel owners issued Federal permits are reminded that they must continue to complete and submit vessel logbooks. Additionally, dealers issued Federal dealer permits for spiny dogfish are advised that they may not purchase spiny dogfish from federally permitted vessels that land spiny dogfish for the duration of period 2 (November 1, 2000, through April 30, 2001). Federally permitted dealers must continue to report all fish purchases from any vessel.

This notice is authorized by the Regional Administrator of the National Marine Fisheries Service
